Dental Cleaning/Periodic Exam

A dental cleaning is a professional cleaning you receive from a registered dental hygienist. Most dental cleanings require an examination by the dentist also. A routine dental cleaning includes scaling and polishing. Polishing completes the cleaning, making the surface of the teeth smooth and minimizing future plaque build-up. Periodontal charting and diagnostic radiographs may be taken, along with helpful oral hygiene instructions. Cleanings should be performed every six months to prevent excessive plaque buildup. Plaque left untreated can lead to unhealthy gums and tooth decay.

Periodontal patients require the process of removing plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces with a variety of methods, depending on the amount of plaque and tartar. Dental hygienists traditionally perform scaling by hand. However, new and advanced technology has led to more modern methods such as ultra scalers. This sophisticated tool allows dental cleanings to be performed more efficiently and in less time.  Periodontal cleaning appointments (periodontal maintenance) are encouraged every 3 to 4 months after scaling/root-planing is complete to maintain a healthy mouth.
